Obama Authorizes Deployment of Up to 17,000 Extra Troops to Afghanistan

On the same day President Barack Obama signed the controversial $787 billion economic stimulus package into law the Commander in Chief also authorized the deployment of up to 17,000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan.

According to a statement released by the White House an army and marine brigade will be sent to Afghanistan to “meet urgent security needs.”

The deployment would be a dramatic increase to Afghanistan where 14,000 U.S. troops are already taking part in a NATO-led mission while another 19,000 are under direct U.S. command and fighting Taliban insurgents.

Much of the focus on terrorism has shifted from Iraq to Afghanistan where violence continues to spread. Obama said the decision to sent additional troops is necessary to stabilize a deteriorating situation in Afghanistan.”
