Taliban militants freed two French journalists and an interpreter Wednesday, 18 months after they kidnapped the trio in Afghanistan. French authorities confirmed reporter Herve Ghesquiere, cameraman Stephane Taponier and interpreter Reza Din were released and will be back in France by Thursday.
Prime Minister Francois Fillon told parliament the hostages were handed over to French forces at the Tagab base “in good health.”
French President Nicolas Sarkozy praised Afghan President Hamid Karzai for his “management of this crisis.”
Taponier and Ghesquiere were working for state network France 3 when they were kidnapped in the mountains of Kapisa in November 2009. The Taliban threatened to kill the trio if French soldiers did not withdraw from Afghanistan.
