Two French journalists held by Taliban militants in Afghanistan for nearly two years arrived safely outside Paris on Thursday.
Herve Ghesquiere and Stephane Taponier were working for France 3 television when they were kidnapped along with their interpreter, Reza Din, outside Kabul on December 30, 2009. The Taliban had threatened to kill Ghesquiere, Taponier and Din if French soldiers did not withdraw from Afghanistan. Militants freed the trio Wednesday.
"This is the moment that we had dreamed about, imagined, fantasized about," Ghesquiere told reporters after arriving at Villacoublay air base.
On Wednesday, French President Nicolas Sarkozy praised Afghan President Hamid Karzai for his “management of this crisis.”
