Israel
has declared there would be no truce in the Gaza Strip until Israeli soldier
Gilad Shalit is released by his captors.
Israel’s
security cabinet made the announcement on Wednesday, stating the blockade that
now exists in Gaza will remain in place until Shalit is freed. In a statement released
shortly after their meeting the cabinet noted, “The security cabinet
unanimously decided that the release of the soldier Shalit is a condition to
any agreement with Hamas.” Shalit was taken hostage in 2006 while patrolling the
border between Israel and Gaza and Israeli officials believe the soldier is
still alive.
Initially
Israel had demanded an end to rocket attacks launched by Hamas before a truce
would be discussed and the latest condition has angered Palestinians who now
believe any chance of peace is quickly slipping away.
Hamas
has criticized the security cabinet’s position stating there could be no link
between Shalit and the blockade. Israel has enforced the blockade since Hamas
took control of Gaza in 2007 and since that time Palestinians have used tunnels
to smuggle in goods from Egypt.
Those
tunnels were targeted by Israel when they launched a three-week campaign inside
Gaza that killed more than 1,300 Palestinians and left another 50,000 homeless.
Egypt
had been in the middle of the truce talks, acting as mediators, but Israel’s
latest demand could lead the neighboring country to abandon their efforts.
