A
Zimbabwe court ruled that Roy Bennett, the Movement for Democratic Change
nominee for deputy agriculture minister in the new unity government, could
still face charges related to his arrest last week and he will remain held
until March 4.
Bennett
was arrested last Friday, the day new ministers were sworn in by President
Robert Mugabe. He is facing possible terrorism charges related to illegal arms
possession.
The
arrest of Bennett angered MDC leaders who called the move politically motivated
and said it was an attempt to undermine the new power-sharing government. The
MDC has called for the release of Bennett as well as more than 30 other MDC
supporters who have been held over the past several months.
Bennett’s
arrest and the subsequent ruling by Magistrate Livingstone Chipadze has already
caused tension in a unity government less than one week old. It took months
before the MDC and ruling ZANU-PF could put their power-sharing agreement into
practice and now that relationship could already be showing signs of trouble.
