Sweden Agrees to Grant Asylum to Guantanamo Bay Detainee

Sweden’s migration court has agreed to grant asylum to a Chinese Muslim man formerly held at Guantanamo Bay for five years on suspected terrorist ties.

The court agreed that Adel Hakimjan was not a terrorist and granted the man permanent residency as a refugee, a move that was hailed as a major victory for activists.

Hakimjan is from China’s Uighur minority and he, along with 17 other Uighurs at Guantanamo, has refused to return to China for fear of persecution as their home country has labeled them as “terror suspects.” The remaining 17 Uighurs have been cleared for release but no country has agreed to accept them.
