A 17-year-old student at one of Manhattans’ most elite
private schools plunged to his death Wednesday. The boy appeared to have fallen
from a window on the 11th floor of The Dalton School. His body landed on the
pavement where other children were playing.
Witnesses say the body barely missed hitting several
children playing on the sidewalk. “I heard a loud bang. It sounded like a
gunshot… he was just dead,” said a Dalton security guard who was outside at the
time. “The fourth graders were out here [and] everybody started running away
from the body.”
Investigators believe the boy’s fall was suicide. They
believe the teen snuck into an empty dance studio on the 11th floor, opened the
window and jumped.
The school has 1,300 students in grades kindergarten
through high school. Dalton was founded in 1919 and has many notable alumni
including actress Claire Danes, actor Chevy Chase and CNN News anchor Anderson
Cooper.
Dalton School has not issued a statement regarding the
student’s death.
