Former
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu received major support in his bid to
return to office after picking up the backing of Avigdor Lieberman and his
Yisrael Beiteinu party.
Netanyahu’s
Likud party holds 27 seats in the Knesset, one less than the Kadima party led
by Tzipi Livni but with the backing of Yisrael Beiteinu, which holds 15 seats,
Netanyahu will likely be asked by President Shimon Peres to form Israel’s next
government.
As
part of his conditional support Lieberman stressed the importance of a broad
coalition government that would be reflect the three largest parties, Kadima,
Likud and Yisrael Beiteinu. Regrading his support of Netanyahu the Yisrael
Beiteinu leader noted, “We are not talking of a government with a restricted
majority. To govern the country, we need a government with the three largest
parties.”
Livni’s
Kadima party has been in favor of continued peace talks with Palestinians while
Netanyahu is opposed to negotiations. A decision from Peres will likely be
announced on Sunday or Monday.
