The
New York Post has continued to defend a controversial political cartoon drawn
by Sean Delonas and published in the paper’s Wednesday edition.
In
the cartoon two police officers are standing over a dead chimp and one remarks “they’ll
have to find someone else to write the stimulus bill.” While the New York Post
has called the chimp cartoon a “parody of a current news event” many failed to
see the humor, calling the cartoon a racist depiction of President Barack
Obama.
According
to the paper the cartoon was referencing a brutal chimp attack that took place
on Monday in Connecticut that led to police shooting the animal. The paper
acknowledged that the caption mocked the recent stimulus plan signed into law
earlier this week but denied that the chimp represented Obama, rather it was
the politicians in Washington being mocked.
That
explanation wasn’t carrying much weight for Rev. Al Sharpton who has already
pledged to picket the New York Post’s headquarters, a paper owned by Rupert
Murdoch’s international media conglomerate, News Corp.
