A prominent cancer researcher adjunct professor at Emory
University was found dead in her luxury midtown apartment Tuesday night.
Authorities say Dr. Eugenia Calle, 57, died from “blunt
force trauma” to the head. Calle’s body was found in her Aqua apartment around
11 p.m. Tuesday by her fiancé, an Atlanta attorney whose name has not been
released. Authorities believe she may have been dead for up to 12 hours before
her body was discovered.
“There did appear to be some signs of a struggle,” said
Lt. Keith Meadows.
It is unclear how the killer gained entry into her
apartment and what the motive was.
Calle, who was selling the apartment, was a physician and
cancer researcher. She made ground-breaking discoveries linking cancer with
obesity. Calle had been the director of Analytic Epidemiology for the American
Cancer Society since 1994. She was also a profession in Epidemiology at Emory
University.
The American Cancer Society and Calle’s former
supervisor, Dr. Otis Brawley, released a statement about her death. “Eugenia
was one of the world’s most respected epidemiologists, researching the causes
of cancer, especially obesity and diet. She directed one of the largest and
most comprehensive cohort studies in scientific history, the American Cancer
Society's Cancer Prevention Study. She was a contributor to news stories,
appearing on national programs including 60 Minutes. Jeanne brought a
formidable intellect and passion for finding answers to cancer though her
research. We are shocked and deeply saddened by the senseless loss of this
tremendously talented friend and colleague,” the statement said.
