Notre Dame settles with Department of Education over sexual harassment cases

By: Daun Lee

The Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights reached a settlement agreement with University of Notre Dame in regards to its handling of student on student sexual harassment claims.

As part of their agreement they will educate students on the ways in which to report sexual harassment and disclose how they will handle allegations of harassment.

Notre Dame also agreed to conduct investigations of harassment within 60 days of the complainant filing. They agreed to protect victim’s rights through the investigation and will not force victims to face the accused. They are also going to refer victims and the accused to the proper counseling services.

The DOE thanked Notre Dame for taking the initiative in combating campus sexual harassment.

In the past few months, Yale University received severe criticism for their lack of action taken in several cases of sexual harassment.

We commonly think of sexual harassment as something that happens on the workplace. A sexual harassment attorney will inform that a large percentage of students are harassed or assaulted by fellow students. Many women who have been harassed either at school or at work often find that their allegations get dismissed by authorities at their school or office.

Sexual harassment lawyers work diligently to eliminate harassment from the workplace, but yet the problem is still prevalent. Only when victim’s feel their rights are protected can the problem become less common, hiring a sexual harassment attorney can give these women and men the confidence to speak up.
