Russian Court Acquits Three Men Facing Trial in Murder of Investigative Reporter Anna Politkovskaya

Two brothers and a former police officer are now free men after a Russian court acquitted the three men accused of aiding in the murder of investigative reporter Anna Politkovskaya.

Politkovskaya, an outspoken critic of the Kremlin, was shot and killed in her apartment building in October 2006. Her murder shocked the international community as she became the 13th journalist murdered during Vladimir Putin’s term as President.

Dzhabrail and Ibragim Makhmudov along with former police officer Sergei Khadzhikurbanov were accused of aiding a third brother, Rustam Makhmudov, who is believed to have actually carried out the murder.

Despite what appeared to be strong evidence from the prosecution a “not guilty” verdict was handed down by the jury and the three men walked out of the court free men.
