Police have arrested a man in the murder of a prominent
cancer researcher less than two days after she was found dead in her Atlanta
apartment.
Jamal Thompson, also known as Shamal, was arrested Thursday
morning and charged in the death of Dr. Eugenia Calle.
It is unclear what lead investigators to believe
Thompson, 27, was responsible for Calle’s murder.
Calle, 57, was found dead Tuesday night by her fiancé in
her apartment at the Aqua Midtown building in Atlanta. Lt. Keith Meadows said
the physician died of “blunt force trauma” to the head. She may have been dead
up to 12 hours before her body was found.
Calle, who was selling the apartment, was a physician and
cancer researcher. She made ground-breaking discoveries linking cancer with
obesity. Calle had been the director of Analytic Epidemiology for the American
Cancer Society since 1994. She was also a professor in Epidemiology at Emory
University.
