A Mexican tour boat carrying American and Mexican citizens sank in the Gulf of California Sunday morning. The charter boat Erik was carrying 27 United States tourists and 17 Mexican crew members when a storm caused it to capsize around 2:30 a.m. about 60 nautical miles from San Felipe, Baja California.
Authorities say 35 people, including all 17 crew members, made it to safety by clinging to debris, floating with life vests and swimming towards shore. The Mexican Navy was notified of the accident after a fishing boat rescued two passengers and the ship’s cook.
Authorities have confirmed at least one American man died and 8 other Americans remain missing. The U.S. Coast Guard is assisting Mexican authorities in the search for survivors.
