Defense attorney Jose Baez admitted to having “mixed feelings” after a jury found his client, Casey Anthony, not guilty of first degree murder and child abuse in the death of her daughter.
"I want to start off by saying that while we're happy for Casey, there are no winners in this case. Caylee has passed on far, far too soon," Jose said Tuesday shortly after the verdict was read.
"My driving force for the past three years has been that there is justice for Caylee...and Casey. Casey did not murder Caylee. Its that simple,” Baez continued. “And today, our system of justice has not dishonored her memory by a false conviction."
“I really do have mixed feeling over the whole situation. This case has brought on new challenges for all of us. Challenges in the criminal justice system and in the media,” he said. "We should all take this as an opportunity to learn that you cannot convict someone until they have their day in court.”
"I'm very happy for Casey. I'm ecstatic for her and I want her to be able to grieve and grow and somehow get her life back together. I think that this case is a perfect example of why the death penalty does not work," Baez added. "If this case gets any attention, its to focus that we should stop killing our own people. I know when I go home my daughter will ask me what did you do today? And I can say I saved a life."
The jury did convicted Anthony, 25, of four counts of providing false information to a law enforcement officer. Her sentencing was scheduled for Thursday at 9 a.m.
