Authorities have ordered an autopsy to be conducted on a female body that was found about 50 miles from Bloomington, Indiana to determine if the remains are those of Lauren Spierer, an Indiana University student who has been missing since early June. The decomposing body was found floating in Fall Creek on Sunday. Police say the condition of the body made it difficult to estimate an age or determine race.
Spierer was last seen leaving a sports bar in Bloomington on June 2. Hundreds of volunteers gathered in late June to search for her. "Perhaps it was a terrible accident that happened and we can deal with that," Lauren’s mother, Charlene Spierer, said at the time. "What we can't deal with is what we don't know. So information is the most valuable thing we need right now.”
Last Friday, Lauren’s mother and father begged anyone with information to contact police. “We are appealing to the parents of the children who may have firsthand or secondhand knowledge of what happened to Lauren,” the couple said at a press conference outside the Bloomington police headquarters.
