Tim Duncan scored 18 points and grabbed 18 rebounds, Tony Parker added 19 points and 11 assists and Matt Bonner finished with 15 points on 5-8 shooting from beyond the three-point line as the San Antonio Spurs (36-17) went on the road and knocked off the Detroit Pistons (27-26) 83-79 on Thursday night.
Detroit jumped to a 15-5 lead in the opening minutes of the first quarter but the Spurs settled down and trailed 24-20 at the end of the frame. In the second San Antonio began to put things together in the final five minutes as Bonner hit a triple to get the Spurs to within 36-34, Roger mason tied the game with an 18-footer and then Bonner buried another three for a 39-36 lead. Allen Iverson kept the Pistons within two in the final minute but Michael Finley stepped up and buried a three with 31 seconds left and San Antonio went into the break leading 45-40.
In the third quarter Detroit was able to tie the game at 61-61 but they could never climb over the hump as the Spurs carried a 64-58 lead into the fourth. Detroit stayed close and were within two but Bonner once again hit a three to give the Spurs some breathing room at 69-64. Detroit wouldn’t go away though and a 7-0 run capped on an Iverson layup with 1:21 left in the game gave the Pistons a 79-78 lead. Parker gave the Spurs the lead back with a pair of free-throws and Detroit couldn’t hit from the floor over the final minute.
San Antonio shot 7-14 from long range while Detroit hit just 2-12 from behind the three-point line.
