Although George and Cindy Anthony believe the jury made a “fair decision” in their daughter’s murder trial, the couple insists the defense team’s arguments were “baseless.”
A jury acquitted Casey Anthony of first degree murder, manslaughter and child abuse on Tuesday after a 33 day trial in which her defense lawyer Jose Baez claimed the 25-year-old’s daughter, Caylee Anthony, accidentally drowned in the family’s pool. Baez alleged Casey and her father George panicked and tried to cover up Caylee’s death. Among Baez’s other shocking claims was that Casey suffered sexual abuse at the hands of her father.
"The family may never know what happened to Caylee Marie Anthony. They now have closure for this chapter of their life. They will now begin the long process of rebuilding their lives,” George and Cindy Anthony's lawyer Mark Lippman, said in a statement shortly after the verdict was read. "Despite the baseless defense chosen by Casey Anthony, the family believes that the jury made a fair decision based on the evidence presented, the testimony presented, the scientific information presented, and the rules that they were given by the Honorable Judge Perry to guide them.”
Casey was convicted of four counts of providing false information to a law enforcement officer. Her sentencing was scheduled for Thursday at 9 a.m.
