Israeli
President Shimon Peres has asked Likud party-leader Benjamin Netanyahu to form the
country’s new government, one day after he received the backing of the country’s
third most powerful party, Yisrael Beiteinu.
Netanyahu
will now have six weeks to form a coalition government and while he has the backing
of religious and right-wing parties he will find it difficult to work with the centrist
Kadima party which holds the most seats in Israel’s Knesset. Kadima leader Tzipi
Livni has already said she would rather be in opposition rather than join a
government formed by Netanyahu.
Despite
Livni’s stance Netanyahu remained determined to reach out to all parties to
form a “broad unity government,” stating “I call on Kadima chairwoman Tzipi
Livni and Labour Party chairman Ehud Barak and I say to them - let's unite to
secure the future of the State of Israel.”
Livni
expressed willingness to join a coalition that included her Kadima party as
well as Likud and Yisrael Beiteinu but said she would not work with far right
and religious parties that clearly did not represent her party’s interests.
At
the heart of the problem for Livni is the issue of Palestine and how to
approach the continuing problems in Gaza. Livni is in favor of peace talks while
Netanyahu has said he was not in favor of providing any concessions.
Netanyahu
will also face issues concerning the global economic crisis that has hit Israel
and the ongoing issues with Iran and their pursuit of nuclear weapons.
