Several Sudanese media outlets report 197 refugees died when the boat carrying them to Saudi Arabia caught fire in the Red Sea off the coast of Sudan. Only 3 people survived. It is still unclear when the accident occurred.
The state-run Sudanese Media Center said the fire started about four hours after the “home-made” boat left Tokar, Sudan. Authorities have not determined the cause of the blaze. All passengers aboard the boat were refugees from countries surrounding Sudan.
Unidentified sources told the Sudanese Media Center that four Yemeni owners of the vessel have been arrested.
