Medical center in NY cited for asbestos safety violations

By: Daun Lee

A safety inspection at a Brooklyn Medical center has revealed a number of asbestos removal safety violations.

Asbestos was commonly used in ceiling tiles and insulation until the 80s. The harmful mineral is known to cause a variety of pulmonary diseases including mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a type of cancer which affects the lining of internal organs and requires expensive medical care. Mesothelioma attorneys can obtain victims of this cancer necessary compensation.

The Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn received 14 citations from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for improper handling of asbestos containing materials. They face fines up to $48,000.

OSHA found that the medical center failed to offer training for employees and engineers working on a renovation project. They also failed to notify outside contractors of the presence of asbestos. The hospital did not label asbestos containing materials that they placed in their dumpsters.

Removal and disposal of building materials that contain asbestos is heavily regulated. People who work in construction and renovation regularly come into contact with asbestos. These individuals are eligible for funds if they become ill from exposure and should consult a mesothelioma attorney.

The Interfaith Medical Center has 15 days to respond and comply with OSHA’s findings.

Close the 3,000 people per year will die from mesothelioma; many more will die from other asbestos-related diseases. Mesothelioma attorneys can obtain compensation for these victims to pay for medical care and ease their pain and suffering.
