Former mob boss James Bulger, also known as Whitey, pleaded not guilty to all 48 charges against him Wednesday in a federal court in Boston, Massachusetts. The charges include extortion, money laundering, racketeering, obstruction of justice, perjury and 19 murder counts.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Marianne Bowler appointed defense attorney J.W. Carney Jr. to represent Bulger, 81, last week after the mobster said he was unable to pay for legal counsel.
Bulger, who was on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list, was captured on June 22 along with his longtime girlfriend, Catherine Elizabeth Grieg, after a tip led authorities to the couple’s Monica, California apartment. He had been on the run since 1995.
