Derek Jeter Remains Shy of 3,000 Hit Mark

Yankee Captain Goes 1-3 to Pull Closer to Mark

The New York Yankees Derek Jeter is still bearing down on his 3,000th hit in the Major League. Within striking distance for nearly a month the aging shortstop has had a number of setbacks on his way to the milestone hit including a stint on the disabled list beginning June 14 for a strained calf that he suffered running to first base.

Last night at the Cleveland Indians Jeter went 1-3 to pull within three hits of 3,000. The stage is now set for a return to Yankee Stadium where he will have four games against the Tampa Bay Rays and a pitching staff that has been mediocre recently.

Jeter would be the 28th player to reach the 3,000 hit mark since Cap Anson of the Chicago Colts became the first in 1897. The most recent addition to the 3,000 hit club was Craig Biggio, long time Houston Astro, who reached the mark on June 18, 2007.

If and when Jeter reaches the mark he will be 1,256 runs behind infamous hitter Pete Rose, one of the few players banned for life from Major League Baseball.
