More than 100,000 demonstrators marched to the city center of Dublin on Saturday, protesting the government’s handling of the current recession and their plans to impose a pension levy on public sector workers.
The march was organized by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions which said it was campaigning for a “fairer and better way” of handling the current recession. Workers have focused on the government’s plan to cut their pension with many echoing the sentiment that it was not the workers who put Ireland in its current situation yet they were being forced to pay for it.
In a statement released to the BBC secretary general of the ICTU said, “Our priority is about ensuring that people are looked after, the interests of people are looked after, not the interests of big business or the wealthy.”
According to the Irish government they were left with no other choice but to impose the pension levy due to a decline in revenue.
