Australia to Hold Memorial Service for Victims of Recent Fires

As part of a national day of mourning Australia will be holding a memorial service in Melbourne in recognition of the victims of the recent fires that killed at least 209 people and destroyed entire towns in the state of Victoria.

 

The ceremony, entitled Together for Victoria, will be held at Rod Laver Arena on Sunday with as many as 50,000 expected to attend and thousands more expected to be watching on large screens placed at five other locations in Melbourne.

 

Survivors of the fires will be brought in from Victoria and given priority seating for the service while Princess Anne, Governor-General Quentin Bryce, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Victorian Governor David de Kretser will also be in attendance.
