Larry H. Miller, the longtime owner of the Utah Jazz, died on Friday after suffering complications of type 2 diabetes. Miller was 64.
Miller had built his fortunes with a car dealership empire and in 1985 he purchased a 50 percent stake in the Jazz and the following year he took complete ownership when he bought the remaining 50 percent. Many in Utah hailed Miller as a hero as his ownership ended speculation that the Jazz were heading to Miami and from that point on he was a favored son in the state.
Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman said in a statement, "Larry was Utah and Utah was Larry. He inspired many and served countless. We all have been made better by his extraordinary life."
Miller had been suffering serious health issues since a June 2008 heart attack. Complications from his diabetes led doctors to amputate his legs six inches below his knees in January and last week he was told that he had a rare condition that prevented oxygen from reaching tissue throughout his body.
