A rescue operation is underway at a soccer stadium in the Netherlands following a roof collapse during construction. Authorities say construction workers were on top of the roof covering seating at the De Grolsch Veste stadium in Enschede when part of it gave way and collapsed.
At least one construction worker died and 14 others were injured. Authorities say more workers could be trapped in the rubble. The exact number of people working in the area at the time of the accident is unknown.
"It is terrible. One person has died and 14 others were injured. Ten of them were taken to hospital. Two of those are seriously injured," Enschede mayor Peter den Oudsten said at a news conference.
Oudsten said the cause if the collapse remains unclear. Authorities closed down roads surrounding the stadium to make the area easily accessible to emergency crews.
De Grolsch Veste stadium is home to the FC Twente soccer team. FC Twente won the Dutch soccer title last year. In light of the team’s recent success, the stadium was being expanded to hold 30,000 people.
