Any time you hear the terminology speed, it isn’t always referring how fast a vehicle is moving. In the addiction treatment and recovery field, “speed” is the slang term that has been coined to mean amphetamine or methamphetamine. It is one of the most powerfully addictive substances along with cocaine, heroine, and opiate-based prescription painkillers and the DEA considers speed as being one of the major drug threats in the US today. In addition to the DEA, numerous health agencies view speed as a serious public health threat.
Every year, there are hundreds of reported cases involving death due to overdose and serious illnesses associated with amphetamine addiction and dependency. As a result of the growing numbers of addiction and dependency, most addiction treatment and recovery centers in the US now offer speed drug rehab programs to help those individuals who are suffering with a speed addiction or dependency. Both types of addiction treatment and recovery centers (traditional and alternative) offer these programs.
Unfortunately, the recovery success rates are considerably higher with the alternative facilities compared to the traditional ones. This is due to a number of reasons starting with the appearance of the facility and continuing through their operation as well as how they approach the speed drug rehab process. It also has a lot to do with the approach that these 2 different types of facilities take with their clients.
As was mentioned in the previous section, there are numerous differences between these two types of facilities starting with the basic appearance of them. The traditional facility has the look of a clinic or hospital which is not very inviting to the addicted individual and oftentimes proves to be intimidating to them. Additionally, they approach every client the same as if there is no difference in emotional, mental, physical, or even spiritual needs that need to be addressed.
They rely on conventional therapies which many professionals today feel are ineffective and out of date. When this is combined with their one-size-fits-all approach to the client’s addiction treatment and recovery, most of their clients will eventually relapse back into their addictions once they return home to their community. This is because that traditional facility did not educate them on how to cope with the pressures and stress of every day life. So they eventually cave in and start using the substance again.
Another aspect of the comparison is that the alternative speed drug rehab programs provide the client with a homelike environment to recover in, as well as educational materials and other recovery tools that will help them cope with their new lifestyle. The alternative facility enables the client a better chance at total recovery so that when they return home, they remain substance-free for life.
