By: Daun Lee

A jury has awarded a Louisiana shipyard worker $1.5 million in damages for asbestos exposure, which caused him to develop mesothelioma.

Leopold Granier Jr. filed the suit against Union Carbide, Cajun insulation and Avondale Shipyards alleging the companies exposed him to asbestos.

Asbestos is known to cause mesothelioma, which is a type of lung cancer. Mesothelioma leads to tumor growth on the lining of the lungs and kills thousands annually. The treatments are costly and the quality if a patient’s life is greatly diminished, because of this a mesothelioma attorney will seek damages from the businesses who use the toxic substance.

A jury in Orleans Parrish Civil district Court found that the Union Carbide, Cajun Insulation and Avondale Shipyard were responsible for negligently exposing Granier to asbestos and liable for damages.

Asbestos had a wide variety of industrial and construction applications because it’s fire retardant. It is present in many buildings and used frequently on ships. Shipyard workers often handled asbestos for import and export.

The EPA heavily regulates the use of asbestos, but prior to the eighties it was commonly used. People who have contracted mesothelioma should contact a mesothelioma lawyer to see if are eligible for compensation.

Thousands of people will die annually from mesothelioma, which can take decades to manifest. Industrial companies have knowingly exposed their employees to asbestos and a mesothelioma attorney can seek damages from these businesses.
