Spain’s Justice Minister Resigns after Controversial Hunting Trip

Spain’s justice minister Mariano Fernandez Bermejo has handed in his resignation following heavy criticism after taking a hunting trip with a judge who was conducting a probe into alleged corruption inside the Popular Party.

Bermejo was angered by the criticism he received regarding the trip and made reference to the outing when he stated, “I can't tolerate the use being made of this against those of us who are working for the ideals of the Socialist government.”

The justice minister stated it was just a coincidence that he had been part of a hunting trip with Judge Baltasar Garzon in Andalucia earlier this month. While he maintained Garzon’s presence was a coincidence the trip came one day after the judge had ordered several prominent business men and members of the Popular Party, something that didn’t escape his critics.

Bermejo maintained his innocence of wrongdoing but said his resignation was tendered for the good of his cabinet and party members.
