Research shows that underage drinking is fast rising within the United State and that alcohol is the drug most commonly abused by youth.
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism released a commentary that indicated that 11% of all alcohol consumed in the United States was consumed by those who are 12 to 20 years old.
“Eleven percent may seem like a small percentage,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside
Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “But, in the ideal world where no youth should be using alcohol, it’s huge. The ages of 12 to 20 are such a critical time in the development of all aspects of an individual, particularly mental and emotional. Real-life statistics show that ninety percent of alcoholics and drug addicts within the US began using prior to the age of 18. The simple solution to ending drug and alcohol abuse later in life is to prevent it from starting in the first place.”
It’s estimated that nearly 8,000 children between the ages of 12 and 17 begin daily drinking. In addition, underage drinkers drink greater than 5 alcoholic drinks six times monthly - a total of over 30 drinks within a 30 day period.
Since brain development continues until approximately 30 years old, it’s feared that cognitive and emotional development are greatly impacted in underage drinkers.
