According
to Zimbabwe’s Commercial Farmers Union at least 77 white-owned farms have been
seized by those close to President Robert Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party over the past
two weeks.
The
seizures were taking place in the provinces of Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland
West, Masvingo and Midlands as part of Mugabe’s land reform policies that
included the redistribution of white-owned farms to landless blacks.
Union
President Trevor Gifford has pointed his finger at MPs, police, the military and
Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe for carrying out the land seizures, an act that was
ruled illegal by the Southern African Development Community Tribunal in
November.
Mugabe’s
land reform policy has left millions of Zimbabweans in need of food as farms that
once produced crops now sit untilled. The growing food shortage is expected to
get worse with news of new farm seizures and under the new unity government
that Mugabe was forced to form with Movement for Democratic Change leader
Morgan Tsvangirai the ZANU-PF appointed ministers of agriculture and lands.
Many
see the recent seizures as a means of undermining Tsvangirai who has made it
his mission to stabilize the failed economy of Zimbabwe.
