Islamic Militants Suspected in Deadly Raid in Algeria, Nine Killed, Two Injured

Nine security guards have been killed and two more left injured after a deadly raid carried out by suspected Islamic militants at a compound east of the capital city of Algiers.

According to reports the attack was carried out on the guards’ Ziama Mansouriah compound near Jijel Sunday evening. The guards, who were working for the private security firm Spas, had been protecting facilities for the state-owned gas and electricity distributor Sonelgaz.

The attack began when a mortar bomb hit the guards’ quarters and was followed by a large number of militants swarming the compound.

Many suspect al-Qaeda, who has a strong presence in the area, was behind the attacks.
