Driver in deadly off-road race says it was an accident

By: Daun Lee

Last August hundreds of spectators gathered to watch an off-road race in the Mojave Desert. When one truck went off track eight people were killed and a dozen others were injured.

The driver of the truck, Brett Sloppy, lost control of his vehicle after it jumped a section of the course known as the “rock pile.” His truck plowed into a crowd of spectators. When his truck came to a halt, he exited the vehicle and saw that there were bodies lying around him. Sloppy has been accused of reckless driving in three civil lawsuits. He has since stopped racing.

Sloppy was not charged by the police for the accident.

An accident attorney can file civil lawsuit against a negligent driver to seek damages for those injured or killed in an accident.

Sloppy believes the US Department of Land Management could have done more to prevent the tragedy. According to regulations, spectators of these off-road races are required to be at least 100 feet away from the track. Some of those killed were as close as 4 ft. There were also more people at the race than is normally allowed; there were hundreds more than the allowable 200 spectators.

People who are injured in tragic accidents such as this one deserve to be compensated by negligent parties. Retaining an accident lawyer can assure that this happens. Accident attorneys have the skills and knowledge to prove who was negligent in such tragedies.
