Twice before President Barack Obama has named a nominee for commerce secretary and each time the nominee has withdrawn their name but it appears things may finally fall into place as former Washington Gov. Gary Locke has been called the “likely candidate” that will finally settle the Cabinet position.
Locke served two terms as governor, becoming the first Chinese-American to hold a state’s highest political office.
Obama had originally nominated New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson but he removed his name from the process after an investigation was launched into a state contract that one of his campaign donors received. On Feb. 13 Obama suffered his second setback in the nomination process for commerce secretary as Republican Senator Judd Gregg determined there were “irresolvable conflicts” on policy issues that would prevent him from serving in the Cabinet.
