Lawmakers in at least four states are drafting proposals for legislation that would make it a felony for parents or guardians to not report the disappearance or death of a child within a certain time frame. The sudden movement for the new bill, which has been dubbed Caylee’s Law, came just days after Florida mom Casey Anthony was acquitted of first degree murder, aggravated manslaughter and aggravated child abuse in the 2008 death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee Anthony.
Anthony did not report Caylee missing and repeatedly lied to authorities about the child’s whereabouts. The toddler was last seen on June 16, 2008. Casey’s mother, Cindy Anthony, reported Caylee missing on July 15. Caylee’s body was discovered on December 11, 2008.
Florida, New York, Oklahoma and West Virginia have already begun drafting bills and numerous other states are reportedly set to do the same.
