Somalia’s
capital city Mogadishu was under heavy fire as rebels stepped up their assault
on Tuesday firing mortars at the presidential palace and a military base used
by African Union and government troops.
The
rebel insurgents were part of a coalition formed by the Islamic Party which has
refused to recognize the new government in Somalia headed by President Sheikh
Sharif Sheikh Ahmed.
At
least 15 people were killed in the attacks and more than 90 left injured, the majority
being civilians who were left vulnerable as mortars fell on the Howlwadag
district near the military base.
Islamic
militants control much of Somalia and have looked to establish greater control
inside Mogadishu while AU peacekeepers from Uganda and Burundi have been
stationed in the city to help preserve the new government.
