Italy Looks to Energy Independence, Signs Nuclear Power Agreement with France

Italy, the world’s largest importer of electricity, took a major step towards becoming more energy independent as Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi signed an agreement with French President Nicolas Sarkozy that could revive nuclear power in the country.

Berlusconi has backed the move towards becoming more energy independent and stressed eth importance of reducing the country’s dependence on foreign oil and gas. On Tuesday he got the support of Sarkozy who agreed to work with Italy in their pursuit.

That agreement would open the door for France’s power company EDF to play a major role in assisting Italy’s ENEL in constructing four power stations.

Both leaders pointed to the importance of developing clean energy in Europe and stressed, according to Sarkozy, they wanted “nuclear power to become a European issue, because it represents the key for development.”
