Drug Rehab Programs
There are several approaches to drug addiction treatment. The levels of care used by the facility will help you determine the amount of time it will take you to accomplish your goals. These levels include, long term residential, inpatient, out- patient, and sober living facilities.
Long Term Residential- These are inpatient facilities that aim to treat the person and help show them what they need to change in their life to enable them to live a drug or alcohol free. The time a person will spend on this type of program can be anywhere between 90 to 180 days. Some of these programs are even open ended, meaning they don’t have a set amount of days and the time spent in the facility will be determined by the person’s progress in the program. Long term residential programs usually have the highest success rate because the treatment attends multiple needs of the person and not just his or her drug abuse. Recently after receiving a host of studies, the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) declared: “For most patients, the threshold of significant improvement is reached at about three months in treatment.”
Inpatient- Inpatient Drug Rehab Program usually uses a more traditional program approach to drug addiction treatment. They typically offer medically supervised detox programs, followed by group therapy and sometimes intensive counseling. This type of program has a time range of between 14 to 30 days. Although some traditional programs report a success rate as high as 30% the average success rate for this type of program is, on average, around 5% to 10%. Those enrolled in an inpatient facility are usually taken to outside groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous to help introduce the person to these outside groups.
Out Patient- This type of program does not require the person to stay overnight in a facility. As with inpatient programs, out-patient programs can be done within a group or intensive counseling. Most out-patient programs are found within a hospital or medical office, but most commonly, within a medical office. The typical number of sessions for out- patient can range from 10 to 20 office visits and the majority of its focus is centered on the psychological and psychiatric aspects of addiction. This type of program has turned out to be least successful approach for addiction treatment because it tries to handle addiction through medication instead of basing itself off of the person’s true underlying issues. Another factor that plays into its success is responsibility. Those who are fighting drug addiction typically have a low responsibility level preventing them to follow through with the whole program’s goals.
Sober Living Facilities- These facilities are referred to as living houses that provide the person with a supervised and sober environment. They are designed to force ethics upon a person through structure and rules. Most of the rules pertain to things such as mandatory curfews, chores, and daily Alcoholic or Narcotic Anonymous meetings. This is a pay to stay environment and the homes are usually privately owned by a person or small group. This is also a program where the person’s success is going to depend on their responsibility. Often times sober living homes can be loosely run, causing a flow of alcohol and drugs to enter the premises.
