In February 2011, La Paloma relocated their Outpatient Program to an off-site location in East Memphis, making it more accessible to a wider range of clients. The new space, in a converted residential area off Memphis’s Brookhaven Circle, boasts a homey feel and a relaxed environment conducive to outpatient treatment. La Paloma’s new off-site facility currently offers daytime intensive outpatient treatment, with a plan to add an evening program in September.
La Paloma’s current inpatient treatment facility, housed in a historic building with a past tied to healing and wellness, recently underwent several updates as well. The building, which began as the Methodist Children’s Hospital, has newly renovated bathrooms in the residential unit, featuring tile and new flooring, and the bedrooms all have new carpeting and updated furniture.
There have also been exciting changes to La Paloma’s staff, with new Clinical Director Jocelyn Penner having joined the team in October 2010. Previously the Family Program Director at The Hanley Center in Florida, this native of Canada has a long history with Dual Diagnosis treatment. Penner also brings an emphasis on families and a focus on not just the patient but supporting the entire family unit in recovery.
La Paloma is also currently in the process of procuring EMDR training for all their counselors. Currently, 30 percent of the staff is already trained in this highly-effective method that will allow La Paloma to address trauma issues more effectively, since approximately 80 percent of those who come into treatment have some kind of trauma history.
