Rwandan
troops have begun to pull out of the Democratic Republic of Congo following a
joint campaign against Hutu rebels that have positioned themselves in the country.
While
falling short of calling the five-week operation against the rebels a complete
success Rwandan Foreign Minister Rosemary Museminali said the FDLR “have been
seriously weakened, their strength considerably reduced.”
Much
of the FDLR is made up of Hutu rebels who fled Rwanda in 1994 following the end
of a genocide campaign that left more than 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutus
dead. They have since waged battle with Tutsi communities in DR Congo as well
as crossed the Rwandan border in sporadic attacks.
In
January the DR Congo and Rwanda agreed to work together in eliminating the Hutu
rebel presence in Congo and thousands of Rwandan troops took part in the operation.
Now those troops are beginning to leave but Museminali stated, “If the
Congolese troops continue the operation, we don't doubt they will achieve their
goal.”
