Rebel Commanders in Sierra Leone Found Guilty of War Crimes

A UN-sponsored war crimes court in Freetown, Sierra Leone has handed down a guilty verdict in the case against three rebel commanders who stood accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to a decade-long civil war that has left the country struggling for stability.

Revolutionary United Front (RUF) leaders Issa Sesay, Morris Kallon and Augustine Gbao were found guilty by the judges who found the three responsible for the rape, mutilation and murder of countless civilians as well as utilizing child soldiers and leading attacks against UN peacekeepers and aid workers.

The trial of the three began in mid-2004 and was the last remaining case being held by the court. The sentencing phase is expected to begin in two weeks.
