Gary Locke Tapped as New Commerce Secretary by President Barack Obama

For the third time since taking office President Barack Obama has nominated a Commerce Secretary as former Washington state Gov. Gary Locke was announced as the Commander in Chief’s latest choice.

Locke served two terms as governor, becoming the first Chinese-American to hold a state’s highest political office.

Obama had originally nominated New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson but he removed his name from the process after an investigation was launched into a state contract that one of his campaign donors received. On Feb. 13 Obama suffered his second setback in the nomination process for commerce secretary as Republican Senator Judd Gregg determined there were “irresolvable conflicts” on policy issues that would prevent him from serving in the Cabinet.
