Former Estonian Defense Ministry Official Sentenced for Selling NATO Secrets to Russia

Former Estonian defense ministry official Herman Simm has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after admitting to selling NATO secrets to Russia.

Simm pled guilty to treason during a secret trial, acknowledging that he had operated as a spy for Russia from 1995 all the way up to his arrest last September. The 61-year-old was believed to have passed more than 3,000 documents into the hands of Russia during that period.

In 2000 Simm became head of security inside the defense ministry, a position that allowed him to handle classified information concerning NATO communications and surveillance systems.

Russia has denied any ties to Simm but they had expressed outrage at Estonia’s decision to join NATO in 2004.
