What is Xanax and what is it prescribed for?
Xanax is the trade name for Alprazolam, one of the benzodiazepines that are short-acting yet highly potent drugs. It is prescribed for the treatment of several different disorders including anxiety or social anxiety disorder, anxiety that is associated with depression, and panic attacks. Xanax is prescribed in two different forms – extended or instant release – both of which can be obtained under a number of different generic names. Today Xanax is a highly abused medication and is illegally trafficked throughout the US black market.
Alprazolam is known to posses several distinct properties which include those that are anticonvulsant, anxiolytic (anti-anxiety or anti-panic agents), hypnotic, muscle relaxant, or sedative. It is quick to relieve the symptoms it is prescribed for and the user typically notices positive results in the first week of taking the drug. However, Xanax is one of the most commonly abused benzodiazepines on the market today. As a result, many addiction treatment and recovery centers have had to implement Xanax drug rehab programs.
Existing controversies about addiction
According to certain health and medical sources, Xanax users who take the drug as it has been prescribed supposedly do not develop an abuse disorder with it. Tolerance levels to the drug have been controversial and one view even claims that prolonged use of the drug renders it ineffectual. Some even conclude that tolerance build-ups never occur. However what is known is the fact that a physical dependence can develop as a result of being treated with Xanax.
Physical dependence is usually evidenced when rebound or withdrawal symptoms become evident. These ultimately necessitate the gradual decrease of dosages over time when discontinuing the use of the drug. Withdrawal symptoms are characteristic of those witnessed with alcohol or other sedative-hypnotics which occurs whenever the taking of benzodiazepines is discontinued. These symptoms can include anxiety, depression, muscle cramps, sweating, tremors, and vomiting.
