Alcohol impairment suspected in deadly boat crash

By: Daun Lee

A boating accident in upstate New York claimed the life of four people and injured two others.

The crash occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning on the Hudson River north of Tivoli. The boat collided with a structure head on and the motor was thrust to the front. The impact of the collision threw the occupants into the water. Two of the deceased are thought to have drowned while the other two are thought to have died as a result of blunt force trauma and drowning.

None of the occupants were wearing life jackets

Investigators found empty beer bottles on the vessel and believe that the person at the helm was speeding. They are also unclear if the boat driver broke other safety rules by not using lights, and traveling into unsafe territory marked by buoys. At this time, they are unclear on who was driving the boat.

The two survivors sustained numerous injuries and are in the hospital recovering. The police have not determined if either of them will be charged.

Boating accidents killed an estimated 672 people in 2010 and injured 3,153. If negligence is suspected, an accident attorney can seek damages from the negligent party.

According to the US coast Guard, alcohol use was the number one factor in boating accidents. In addition to car collisions, most accident lawyers can handle boating accidents. The injured and families of the deceased deserve to be compensated if another person’s carelessness caused them harm and an accident attorney can fight for these victims.
