Colorado fire chief suspended for DUI and impersonation of a police officer

A Hygiene, Colorado man was arrested for DUI and impersonation of a police officer late Saturday night.

Volunteer Fire Chief William Nelson is accused of impersonating an officer after he used the red lights in his truck to attempt a traffic stop. Nelson, 57, was tailing a car carrying three passengers.

Kayla West told police that a gold colored truck pulled out in front of her from a driveway forcing her to slam on her brakes. When she pulled around the slow moving vehicle, the driver flipped on his red lights and began following them. On two different occasions, occupants of the car tried to confront Nelson, but became fearful when they detected a strong odor of alcohol and noticed he was belligerent. They then contacted police who arranged to intercept the two vehicles.

When police caught up with Nelson, they found 5 grams of marijuana in his vehicle along with a handgun, which was in the center console, and a rifle. Nelson told a deputy he was trying to pull over the car because he suspected they were drunk, but it turns out that he was the inebriated one and in need of a DUI attorney.

Nelson refused to take field sobriety tests and he was subsequently arrested. He later agreed to take a blood test. A DUI lawyer can help him with his drunken driving charge, which is his second; the previous charge is from 1996.

While in the patrol car en route to the jail, Nelson repeatedly accused the officer of speeding.

Beating a DUI charge is very difficult without the representation of a DUI attorney.
