Ahmed Wali Karzai, the council chief of Afghanistan’s Kandahar province and the half-brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai, was assassinated Tuesday during a meeting at his home. A spokesman for Kandahar government Tooryalai Wesa said a guard shot Karzai in the head and chest. Officials have not confirmed or denied claims that the guard was working for the Taliban.
President Karzai confirmed his half-brothers death in a news conference. “My brother Ahmad Wali Karzai was killed today,” he said. "The Afghanistan people have suffered a lot. Every Afghan family has suffered. I hope one day these sufferings end."
The motive for the killing remains unclear. No other details were released.
