Latvian President Nominates Valdis Dombrovskis as Prime Minister

Former finance minister Valdis Dombrovskis has been tapped by Latvian President Valdis Zatlers as the country’s new prime minister, calling on the 37-year-old member of the opposition New Era party to form a new government.

Dombrovskis will be called upon to stabilize a country that is facing financial collapse, a situation that led to former PM Ivars Godmanis to resign last week.

Dombrovskis has already said Latvia would need to make serious budget cuts to get back on track and lift itself from its current recession, a situation that has already led to the country receiving money from the IMF, World Bank and EU as part of a bail-out.

With the nomination Dombrovskis will now hold talks with other political parties in an attempt to form a new government.
