A hero to the addiction treatment field, Betty Ford, passed away last week at the age of 93.
Well known as the First Lady and wife to President Gerald Ford, that role may even be overshadowed by the role that she played in helping America embrace social stigmas, particularly alcoholism and addiction.
“Betty Ford was unafraid of bringing her personal problems to light,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside
Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Among those personal struggles were alcoholism and prescription drug abuse, complete social taboos during that time. However, her openness with the world showed us that no one is immune from the grips of addiction and that if she, the First Lady of the United States, could admit that she had a problem and get help, anyone could and can. And, indeed they did and have. She changed the way that America and the world look at addicted individuals - she showed us what compassion really means. For that, we celebrate her life and contribution to drug rehabilitation, alcoholism treatment and the importance of alcohol and drug rehabs worldwide.”
